Once in a great while a special boat comes to market. This is the case of R.V. Calanus and that for three reasons: flexibility, medium size and long range. Originally commissioned by the U. of Miami as a research vessel, she was refitted with so much equipment that she could serve as well as a dive boat, a treasure hunter, a salvage boat, a container transport, a tender or just as a comfortable live aboard. Very few boats fall into Calanus category for size and draft. Most are smaller or larger. At 69 ft. in length and only 5 ft. draft, Calanus can do the job of larger vessels at a fraction of the costs in investment, operation and maintenance fees. Her large fuel reserves and consumption economy allows her as much as 22 days autonomy. She could cross the Atlantic easily.
After the last revisions and upgrades by the U. of Miami in 1996, Calanus was refitted again in 2005 by her current owner. You will want to read on and get a clearer understanding of what REFITTED means. No detail was left unattended.
Calanus is a “star” as well. Indeed, she appeared painted in red in the just released MGM thriller “Into the blue” starring Paul Walker and Jessica Alba. If this website wets your appetite, go and see the “star” live on the big screen
Whether you are a private individual or a corporation, Calanus has the flexibility of a working boat that will meet all your needs at a reasonable cost.
Just like her added-on vintage World War II solid brass unbreakable portholes, she is a bulletproof investment.
As one’s reads through the exhaustive list of equipment at her own web sitre, one word comes to mind: redundancy. Indeed, there is a great deal of equipment that comes in pairs. Nothing was spared to make the operation of Calanus safe, reliable and efficient.
For more information about this very special vessel, please, visit her own site at: http://www.calanus.websiteanimal.com. The site contains numerous lists of equipment, specs, description, layout, list of recent refits and 52 photos.
